It's an odd name for a train but in Australian history it is a living legend. The legend has soared to new heights with the extension of The Ghan journey to Darwin. When The Ghan first departed Adelaide for Alice Springs, it was always intended that it would one day travel through to Darwin. More than 70 years on, that dream has become reality.

Boarding The Ghan in Adelaide or Darwin, experience one of the most fascinating great train journeys of the world. Connections are available on the Indian Pacific and The Overland for guests travelling to or from Sydney and Melbourne. Enjoy 2 nights aboard this great train in either direction. Platinum Service on The Ghan

Great Southern Rail announces the introduction of an exciting new superior level of service aboard The Ghan called Platinum Service later this year.

Platinum Service is a new luxury level of train travel, like no other Australian train accommodation. The new Platinum Service Cabins are currently being built by a luxury boat builder to a completely new floor plan inspired by the world’s most luxurious trains.

Platinum Cabins will be offering deluxe accommodation including double beds, spacious ensuite and 24 hour room service. They will have all the modern comforts, in a classic style, with a distinctly Australian character.

This new service level is in addition to our existing Red and Gold Services, which will continue to operate on The Ghan. This means The Ghan will now cater to all budgets from Red Service the most economical way to travel, through to Gold Service for those holidaymakers who want to travel in comfort and now the deluxe offering of the new Platinum Service.

Platinum Service has been designed to meet the needs of the discerning traveller looking for that next level of comfort that will truly be the ultimate way to travel in style through the heart of Australia.

The details of Platinum Service are still under wraps as final preparations are being made. The first journey on The Ghan offering Platinum Service is expected to take place late 2008.

Great Southern Rail has launched a new “Platinum VIP Club” for domestic and international holiday makers interested in experiencing a new level of service on one of Australia’s most famous rail journeys.

Membership is free, and members will be given priority access to purchase tickets prior to tickets going on sale for the general public.
