Northern Territory
Northern Territory - The legendary Ghan travels from Darwin in The Top End (Darwin) through the heart of Australia to Alice Springs, the gateway to Uluru.
The Northern Territory is perhaps best known for the world famous Uluru (Ayers Rock). But for all its grandeur, this magnificent red monolith is only one of many natural wonders to be found here. Darwin itself is an easy going, yet cosmopolitan city with lush tropical scenery and a relaxed atmosphere. It also happens to be the gateway to the world heritage area of Kakadu National Park and Litchfield's spectacular waterfalls. The town of Katherine is further south down the line and is often described as the place where 'the outback meets the tropics'. Nitmiluk National Park is one of the most spectacular features of the Katherine area and includes the famous Katherine Gorge.
Since 19th century pioneers opened up the Red Centre, Alice Springs has evolved into a modern outback town with many attractions of its own including some stunning art galleries. But there's no denying it's most famous for being your starting point to discover Uluru (Ayers Rock), Kata Tjuta (The Olgas), Kings Canyon and Palm Valley. And rightly so. These attractions really are like nothing else on earth. Even if you're not a history buff, the rich cultural and indigenous heritage of the Territory is sure to captivate you adding yet another facet to this intriguing land.
